What if open conversation in a safe place – along with a little pizza – could change the world? Resident Services Coordinator, Megan Brayton, at Jamboree’s Park Landing intentionally developed a program designed to give high school students the opportunity to gather and talk in a safe environment. Along with the pizza, the kids talk about everything from mental health to their favorite colors.
Programs like these are intentional at Jamboree properties across California, to support learning and foster skills that empower residents for the future. Designed by Jamboree, our REACH approach to resident services is a five-letter acrostic that focuses on the key values that frame our services for kids, families, seniors, and those living with special needs.
Core skills to discover creative solutions to challenges
Megan’s program is an example of the letter “C” – Core skills to discover creative solutions to challenges. She helps teens learn to communicate effectively and listen to others. The students will also help host a “Thankful for You” event for Thanksgiving, an activity that will boost their self-confidence, giving them the opportunity to work together to reach a defined goal.
At Clark Commons, kids and teens participated in an event called, “You Matter,” where they discussed the importance of a healthy mindset and the role it plays in overcoming challenges. There were six goals:
- Be aware of stress and learn to cope with it in a positive way
- Find a healthy balance between work and play
- Think positively
- Learn from past mistakes and move forward
- Adapt to unexpected changes
- Recognize the value of support from others and learn where to find it
“My primary goal is for these students to know their feelings and emotional well-being matter,” said Resident Services Coordinator Victoria Martinez. “And, in turn, they will use what they learn to overcome challenging personal situations.”
Generosity, planning, persistence, and resilience
The values for REACH letter “C” are generosity, planning, persistence and resilience, highlighted at West Gateway Place in West Sacramento by residents who regularly gather for lunch to socialize or enjoy a game of Bingo. In this walkable community, they enjoy strolling to the farmers market for fresh fruits and vegetables, and chatting about their families and what’s happening in the neighborhood. For many, their neighbors are becoming friends with whom they can share life day to day.
